How to Make an ATS-Friendly Resume for Free (Step by Step)

By the Tronics Store Team · Last updated October 11, 2026 · 10 min read

Quick answer: You can make an ATS-friendly resume for free in Google Docs or Microsoft Word: start from a blank single-column page, add standard sections (Contact, Profile, Skills, Experience, Education), write skills as plain text using the job ad’s wording, turn duties into measurable results, then export as .docx or PDF and run a free plain-text parse test.

You do not need a paid resume builder or a monthly subscription to get past an applicant tracking system. A blank document, the job advert and about an hour are enough. Paid tools can save time, but the formatting rules that matter are free to follow.

This guide takes you from a blank page to a finished, tested resume in eight steps, using only free tools.

8 steps to a free ATS-friendly resume

Step 1: Start from a blank page, not a fancy template

Many free templates use tables or text boxes for layout, which can scramble parsing. A blank document with normal paragraphs is the safest base.

Step 2: Set up a single-column layout

Margins of about 1.5–2.5 cm, one column, body text 10.5–12pt in Arial, Calibri or Georgia. Bold for job titles is fine.

Step 3: Add your contact line in the body

Name on the first line, then phone, email, city and LinkedIn on the second. Do not put them in the document header.

Step 4: Write a 3-line profile

Example: Customer service coordinator with 4 years in telecoms support. Skilled in Zendesk, call quality reviews and team scheduling. Looking to move into a team lead role.

Step 5: Build a Key Skills section from the job ad

List 8–12 hard skills you genuinely have, using the advert’s exact words. If the ad says “stakeholder management”, do not write “working with people”.

Step 6: Turn duties into results

Use the X-Y-Z formula: accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z. “Cut average ticket resolution time from 26 to 18 hours by building a shared macro library for 12 agents.” The free AI Screener Cheat Sheet has a full rewrite bank, and our guide to ChatGPT and Claude prompts for resume bullets helps you do it faster.

Step 7: Add education and certifications

Qualification, institution, year. Add short courses and certifications that match the role.

Step 8: Export and test

Download as .docx or PDF. Then copy all the text into Notepad and check the order. Follow our free ATS score check for the keyword-matching step.

Free resume builders vs doing it yourself

Free online builders are convenient, but many lock PDF downloads behind a subscription, add watermarks or use multi-column designs. Doing it yourself in Docs or Word gives you full control and a file you can edit forever. If you like design, our guide on making a resume in Canva without breaking ATS shows how to keep it readable.

Final checks before you apply

  • Spell-check, then read it out loud once.
  • Every keyword you added is backed by a bullet that proves it.
  • File name: FirstName-LastName-Resume-JobTitle.pdf.
  • Cover letter uses the same contact details and keywords (see cover letters get scanned too).

Frequently asked questions

Can I make an ATS-friendly resume in Google Docs?

Yes. Use a blank document, one column, standard headings and plain-text skills, then download as .docx or PDF. Avoid templates that use tables for layout.

Is Microsoft Word good for ATS resumes?

Yes. A .docx file is accepted by almost every ATS. Just avoid text boxes, columns and putting your contact details in the header.

Are free ATS resume templates safe to use?

Some are. Check that the template is single-column with no tables or text boxes, then run a plain-text paste test after filling it in.

How long does it take to make an ATS-friendly resume?

About 60–90 minutes for the first version. Tailoring it for each job afterwards usually takes 10–15 minutes.

Do I need to pay for an ATS checker?

No. A plain-text paste test and a manual keyword count are free and effective. Paid tools mainly add speed and convenience.
